Ensure Workplace Safety with Benchmark Shelving and Storage
Compliance with WHS Act
Under the WHS Act, all persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) must ensure, as far as is ‘reasonably practicable’, a safe working environment for all workers and others at a workplace. This involves risk management and adherence to all applicable WHS legislation and industry standards.
The updated Australian Standards for racking design (AS 4084.1:2023) and racking operation (AS 4084.2:2023) were introduced in 2023, setting the new benchmark for warehouse and logistics environments. Any new racking installation or modifications to existing systems must now align with these revised requirements.
Do the AS 4084-2023 Standards need to be applied to my existing racking?
Racking bought in 2022 or earlier that was compliant with the 2012 standard doesn’t need to be replaced. However, if the system is altered, relocated, or, indications of fatigue or damage begins or structural fatigue, it must be brought up to the 2023 AS 4084 standards.
Older systems manufactured before the 2012 standard are generally advised to be upgraded to ensure compliance and safety.
Our APEX and Global racking components produced from 2012 to 2023 remain compatible with the updated 2023 standards.
If you’re unsure whether your current racking setup meets the new requirements, a Benchmark team member can organise a racking inspection to confirm compliance.
Importance of Pallet Racking Inspections
Pallet racking systems are a significant investment and essential to warehouse operations. However, many workplaces overlook the importance of safe operation and maintenance procedures. Even the most careful forklift operators can cause damage, leading to serious consequences if undetected.
Regular Inspections
To comply with Australian Standards AS 4084.2.2023 Steel Storage Racking (Section 5.2.3), Formal Inspections must be conducted at intervals not exceeding twelve months. Informal Inspections are the responsibility of the asset owner and should be conducted on a daily or weekly basis.
How long does a racking inspection take and what are the costs involved?
A thorough racking inspection typically requires a couple of hours at minimum, and for larger facilities, the process can extend over multiple hours or days. The cost can vary widely from a few hundred dollars to several thousand depending on the size of the site and whether specialised elevated equipment is needed.
Benchmark Shelving and Storage offers thorough inspections and audits of your pallet racking in accordance with AS 4084:2023. We will also provide a competitive no-obligation quote to address any issues identified during the inspection.
